The next 12-week session begins
March 23, 2026.

What is the Artist's Way?

Written by Julia Cameron and first published in 1992, The Artist’s Way book is a culmination of Cameron’s work as a writer, poet, and filmmaker—and also as a teacher and facilitator. As she recounts in the introduction, she has taught countless courses helping people from all backgrounds nurture their creativity and uncover their inner artist. This book is based on her classroom and course facilitation. Now in it’s 30th anniversary edition, it has sold over five million copies.

The book is divided into 12 weeks, each focusing on a different aspect of the creative life. Whether you go through the book solo or with a group, each chapter offers a reflection on the topic as well as exercises to work through throughout the week.

In addition to reading the chapter and working through the week’s exercises, the two signature core tenets of the process are daily morning pages and weekly artist dates.

Morning pages are a daily practice of free-writing three pages, long-hand. The purpose is to challenge yourself to come back to the practice each day. Will you miss some days? Undoubtedly! But the point is to keep coming back, even when we’re not perfect at keeping up with it. And to write three pages, even when you can’t think of anything. Even when it’s boring or what comes out is sad or embarrassing or uninspired. There’s a particular magic to putting words on the page just to put them there—and see what surprises emerge over time.

And just know, you’ll never (ever!) be asked to share your morning pages. They’re just for you.

Artist dates are a weekly practice of carving out time for creative inspiration. This could be a walk down your own block, no ear buds, just looking at each leaf, bird, doorway, or piece of litter with new perspective. It could be spending an hour in a museum. It could be going to see a film and then writing a backstory for one of the minor characters. The point is that our creativity has to be fed in order to flourish.

When you join the group, you’ll be supported in these practices. You’ll be encouraged to keep up with your morning pages even when you show up having only done two out of the last seven days. And when you say, “For my artist date, I kind of want to ask to borrow a friend’s dog and take it to the dog park, but is that weird?” Or, “I signed up for a paint-and-sip class but I’m embarrassed to go alone.” Or, “I’ve always wanted to try one of those aerial yoga classes, but I’m sure I’ll make a fool of myself.” You’ll be met with a resounding, “Do it! And please tell us all about it next week!” And who knows, there may even be someone in the group who says, “I’ve done that. Let me tell you how intimidated I was and how totally OK it turned out to be.”

Here’s everything you get when you join the Artist’s Way group:

  • Inspiration and encouragement for your weekly self-guided artist dates.

  • Accountability to move through the process as you show up for yourself and your group each week.

  • Conversation partners to help you get unstuck when an exercise has you stumped.

  • Dedicated time to nurture your inner artist.

  • Connection and community with other creatives of all experience levels, backgrounds, and modalities.

  • Daily journaling that provides insight and awareness into yourself as an artist.

Not only will you grow and be inspired by working through the Artist’s Way program itself, by being a part of the group, you’ll grow in confidence as you help others through their processes and inspire them with your creativity, vulnerability, and willingness to experiment.

The keys to success:

How to get the very most out of your Artist’s Way experience.

  1. Block off time on your calendar. We will start and end on time, so please be punctual! You may want to block an additional 15 minutes off on your calendar to avoid mentally checking out before our session ends.

  2. Limit distractions. This is time to connect with your inner artist and encourage your peers, so I encourage you to silence your phone and let household members and colleagues know this is your dedicated artist time.

  3. Plan to be stationary, in a space where you can hear and come on the mic and have your camera on for the duration of the session.

  4. Purchase or borrow your copy of the book and read the introduction before our first session. And read each week’s chapter before our session.

  • Each session will start off with a check-in question and time for each person to share how the previous week has gone with morning pages, their artist date, and anything they’ve noticed or struggled with in terms of creativity.

Then we’ll spend the majority of our time working through a few of that week’s exercises from the book. We’ll spend 5-15 minutes doing each exercise independently, and then discuss for 5-10 minutes before moving on to the next one. We won’t get through every exercise but will prioritize those that are of greatest interest to the group.

Finally, we’ll end by sharing goals and intentions for the week, including/especially inspiration for our artist dates for the week.
